On-campus employment reminders for F-1 and J-1 student employees

Greetings from the International Students and Scholars Center.

As the Spring 2024 semester comes to an end, we're providing some reminders regarding the rules and regulations for on-campus employment for F-1 and J-1 international students.

For those graduating in Spring 2024
There are different rules compared to U.S. students as it relates to their final day of employment. F-1 and J-1 international students cannot work beyond their degree completion date.

  • For undergraduate students, their final day of employment is ASU's degree conferral date. Therefore, the last day they can work on campus is May 6, 2024
  • For graduate students, their final day of employment depends on their last academic requirement, but for most students, it aligns with ASU's degree conferral date of May 6, 2024. However, for thesis/dissertation students, the date may vary slightly depending on their academic requirements.

Please note: RA/TA/GSA offer letter end dates may extend beyond a student’s degree completion date. While students may receive a paycheck after their degree completion date, all employment must stop by that date. Work performed after the degree completion date would be considered unlawful and grounds for the termination of their F-1 immigration status.

Hours per week allowed during summer break
F-1 and J-1 students who will continue their degree programs into the fall semester are permitted to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer semester. This is regardless of whether they are enrolled in classes during the summer or not

Please be aware that this provision does not apply to students for whom the summer semester is either their first or final semester. In such cases, these students are still limited to 20 hours per week.

For continuing students, the official summer break begins May 6, 2024, and will last until Aug. 18, 2024. Starting Aug. 19, 2024, students must once again limit their working hours to no more than 20 hours per week.
