On-campus Work Authorization

Eligibility

To be eligible for on-campus employment students must:

Employment must not interfere with full-time study (no work during class time).

  • Students can work up to 20 hours per week during the fall/spring semester and 40 hours per week during breaks.

  • Work cannot average more than 25 hours per week for the year (all positions, including stipend-paid jobs).

  • Can have more than one on-campus job, but can only work for a total of 20 hours per week combined during the fall/spring semester and 40 hours per week combined during breaks.

Students cannot work as a student beyond the degree completion date. Undergraduate students will complete on their degree conferral date. Completion dates will vary for graduate students.

Please refer F-1 and J-1 students to ASU ISSC, if they receive a Tentative Non-Confirmation from the DHS USCIS eVerify process.

Hiring Process

Using Kenexa BrassRing.

F-1 students

New and transfer students who completed SEVIS Registration and enroll full-time are eligible to work on-campus as early as 30-days prior to the first day of the semester.

When the Kenexa BrassRing routes the requisition to the ISSC for approval, ASU ISSC will review the student's ASU and immigration records and may request for further documentations from students. Once the required information or documents are received, the ISSC will either approve or deny the request with comments.

F-1 students who complete their first degree program in spring and will start a second degree program in the fall, may be eligible to work during the summer. The student has to request a new degree I-20 from the ISSC and enroll full-time for fall prior to being authorized to work on-campus during the summer.

J-1 students

All J-1 students processed through Kenexa BrassRing are routed to the ISSC for approval. The ISSC will contact students to ask for proof of on-campus employment authorization from their J-1 program sponsor.

Students must receive permission from their J-1 program sponsor for on-campus employment. Each J-1 program sponsor has different procedures and processing times.

Social Security Number

Provide F-1 and J-1 students who do not have SSN with an employer letter printed on department letterhead and sign with ink.

The Social Security Administration requires employers to include the Employer Identification Number (EIN) on the employer letter.
