Important CPT Information about Paid and Unpaid Internships

As you search for internship opportunities, both paid and unpaid, it’s important to know about the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) requirements for F-1 international students.

If you plan to participate in any off-campus internship, both paid and unpaid, you must apply for CPT authorization before starting. This requirement applies to all off-campus internships performed while in the U.S., as they are considered employment under U.S. immigration regulations.

Failing to get CPT authorization before starting your paid or unpaid internship will result in the termination of your I-20.

Steps to Apply for CPT:

  1. Confirm eligibility: To check if you're academically eligible for CPT, consult your Academic Advisor or Internship Coordinator. You must have been enrolled full-time for one academic year and obtain an internship that directly relates to your major.
    1. CPT cannot be authorized for experiences that relate to a minor or certificate program.
  2. Receive academic department approval: Once you have an internship offer (paid or unpaid), you need approval from your academic department. Each department has its own process, so please check with your academic advisor for details.
  3. Submit the CPT eForm request: After your academic department approves your internship, submit a CPT I-20 eForm request to the ISSC. Please note our standard processing time is up to 7 business days. Due to the volume of requests, we cannot expedite these requests, so plan accordingly.
  4. Receive CPT authorization: You cannot begin your internship until you receive CPT authorization from the ISSC, which will come in the form of a CPT I-20.

Please start the CPT application process early to avoid any delays in your internship plans.
