Financial Guarantee | Proof of Funding

International students must submit valid proof of funding to the International Students and Scholars Center when requesting certain updates to an I-20: extension to the program end date, change of degree level, adding a dependent, etc.

  • Students who are newly admitted to ASU and requesting their initial I-20 should continue to work with Admissions Services to receive their I-20.

  • Students who are admitted to Global Launch should continue to work with Global Launch to receive their I-20.

Funding Requirements

Funds must show at least:
For ASU students at Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic, Tempe, West
  • $50,139 for graduate students
  • $55,373 for undergraduate students
For ASU students at the Colleges at Lake Havasu City
  • $31,871 for undergraduate students

Notes:

  • If you have dependent(s), add the amount accordingly:  Spouse - $7,000 | Each Child - $5,000.
    • Students on Active Post-OPT or STEM OPT Extension only need to provide a financial guarantee showing $7000 for spouse and/or $5000 for each child.
  • Program fees may be added to your I-20 according to your major.
  • Funds must be in U.S. dollars. If in a foreign currency, the financial document must indicate the U.S. dollar equivalency.
  • If the financial documents are not in English, a certified translation of the documents must be submitted along with the original documents.
  • Tuition cost and  living expenses figures are taken from the Financial Assistance website:
  • ASU Insurance cost is provided by ASU Health Insurance.
  • Undergraduate tuition is based on 12 hrs, Graduate is based on 9 hrs.
  • Student-Initiated fees, Graduate Student Support Fee, SEVIS Fee, and Loan fee were added under Living Expenses and Mandatory fees.
  • Room, Board, and living expenses are averaged of the cost for all campuses (except Havasu) and living off-campus.

Acceptable Financial Documents

Personal or Family Funds

Funds must be in a savings or checking account. Other types of funds will be subject to review and additional documentation may be requested.

  • Official letter from a bank or financial institution dated within six months and signed by an authorized representative indicating the account holder’s available funds.
  • A printed statement from a bank or other financial institution will be accepted only if the relevant information (account number, name, address, account balance) is clearly indicated. Must be the most current monthly statement.

If student is not an account holder of the savings or checking account submitted, a letter signed and dated by the account holder must be submitted along with the bank letter or bank statement. The account holder letter must state that he/she is responsible for the student’s educational expenses at ASU. Please use this PDF icon letter template.

 

ASU Department Funds

  • Research Assistant (RA) or Teaching Assistant (TA)  – Provide an offer letter valid for future semesters/academic year showing the amount of benefits, including but not limited to tuition waiver, stipend, and health insurance.
  • ASU Fellowship or Scholarship – Provide letter valid for future semesters/academic year.

If the funding provided by ASU does not cover the required Financial Guarantee amount, proof of additional personal or family funds will need to be submitted to make up the difference.

Government Sponsored Funds

A financial guarantee or financial support letter which is valid for future semesters/academic year will be required.

Additional Information for students with authorized OPT

For individuals requesting a dependent be added to their SEVIS record during an authorized period of Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT), a signed and dated employer offer letter citing salary amounts sufficient to cover expenses is acceptable.
