Reporting Your First Arrival

Upon arrival, as a new or transfer F-1 and J-1 student or scholar, you are required to report your arrival to ASU ISSC.

F-1/J-1 Students

Upon arrival to the U.S. (or arrival to ASU for SEVIS transfer students), you must complete the mandatory online SEVIS check-in. You will find the link to the eForm in My ASU under Priority Tasks. You do not need to report your arrival in-person.

New Student Check-in

You should arrive to the U.S. and ASU no later than the start date listed on your ASU I-20 or DS-2019.

1. Gather your immigration documents. Here's what you'll need:

    • ASU I-20 or DS-2019
    • Passport (all pages showing biographical information and photo)
    • F-1 or J-1 visa, or Approval Notice (Canadian citizen will not have a student visa)
    • Electronic I-94 (can be retrieved from U.S. Customs and Border Protection website)
    • Your LOCAL address (residential or temporary address here in Phoenix area)

2. Log in to My ASU and click on 'Complete SEVIS Check-in' under your Priority Tasks. Read and follow the instructions.

3. Submit the eForm. After submitting the eForm, do not cancel the eForm. Simply close the browser by clicking the 'X' button.

You will receive email confirmation of your eForm submission.

  • If further information or documentation is needed, the ISSC will contact you by email or phone.
  • If you have your F-2 or J-2 dependents, your dependents will be automatically activated when your record is activated.
  • If your DS-2019 was not issued by ASU, please be sure to follow the requirements from your J-1 Exchange Visitor sponsor for reporting your arrival.

When your eForm status shows approved in My ASU, we have completed your SEVIS Registration to activate your SEVIS record. You will receive an email when your continued attendance I-20 is ready to be picked up from ASU ISSC.

Sign and date your new I-20. This is now your most current I-20 to use for travel. Be sure to put your previous I-20 in a safe place.  You are required to keep all of your original I-20s for your records.

J-1 Scholars

After your arrival, attend a SEVIS Check-In/Orientation session as soon as possible. Sessions are held Monday-Thursday at 2 p.m. and Friday at 10 a.m. Typically, SEVIS Check-in lasts for about 30 minutes to one hour. Please call 480-727-7125 or email to schedule your SEVIS Check-In/Orientation.

SEVIS Check-In/Orientation are conducted in a group setting, so please be on time for your appointment and have all of your documents with you.

You will need to bring the original and a copy of each document listed below, to your orientation session, for you and any accompanying J-2 dependents:

  • Passport(s) (must show visa and entry stamps)

  • I-94 Arrival/Departure Record(s)

  • DS-2019(s)

  • Proof of insurance. Must meet U.S. Department of State requirements.

Please also include your local U.S. address, local phone number and email address.

J-2 dependents need not accompany you to the check-in, as we have limited space.
