Afghan Scholars Program

Afghan scholars, journalists, and researchers are invited to request a professional appointment at Arizona State University.

Arizona State University (ASU) welcomes scholars, journalists, and researchers who have recently left Afghanistan (or are planning their departure) to request an academic appointment to the university.

Afghans selected to participate in this program will receive financial and institutional support from ASU for 1 year, with possible renewal.

This program is open to Afghans who have legal residence in the U.S. or are in the process of obtaining a U.S. visa.

To apply for a possible appointment at ASU, please fill out the form on this webpage.

ASU will respond to your inquiry as quickly as possible.

The ASU Afghan Scholars Program is no longer accepting applications.

However, there are other programs designed to assist Afghan scholars with positions at other U.S.-based universities.

The ASU Afghan Scholars Program is only available to Afghan professors, researchers, journalists, and other professionals who meet either of the following criteria:

  • Currently in the United States
  •  Have a valid U.S. visa with plans to travel to the U.S.

While we recognize the severity of the situation facing so many Afghans, this program is currently not accepting submissions from Afghans attempting to leave Afghanistan.

Individuals will be evaluated on a number of criteria, including but not limited to: credentials, ability to travel to the United States, professional experience, and a field of study that matches with an ASU participating college and/or school. Appointments are not guaranteed and will only be offered to a select group of applicants.

We particularly welcome applications from those with expertise in areas including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Women’s international leadership
  • Global Security
  • Sustainability / Global Futures
  • Justice Studies / Law / Human Rights
