Federal Law

Follow U.S. laws and stay informed

As an international student or scholar on an F-1/J-1 visa, it is important to follow all federal laws, as they can directly impact your immigration status. Not following these laws can put your status at risk.

Federal prohibitions to keep in mind

Firearms

Federal law prohibits international students on a student visa from buying or owning a firearm or ammunition.

  • Specific exceptions (like being admitted for lawful hunting or sporting activities) can be read in detail in the Student Code of Conduct 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(5)(B) and 922(y)(2).

Additionally, ASU policy (PDP 201-05) prohibits the use, possession, or display of the following on university property or at university-sponsored events:

  • Any weapons,
  • Dangerous items,
  • Fireworks, or
  • Other hazardous materials.

Please check the Student Code of Conduct for more information.

Marijuana use

Although Arizona decriminalized marijuana in 2020 at the state-level, it is still illegal under federal law for F-1/J-1 students to possess or use it. Also, when you enter the U.S., your social media, texts, and emails can be searched. Evidence of drug use (even jokes or pictures) could cause you to be denied entry into the U.S.

  • Remember, marijuana use is not allowed on ASU campuses, even if you have a medical marijuana card. Please check the Student Code of Conduct for more information.
