On-campus employment reminders for F-1 and J-1 student employees

Greetings from the International Students and Scholars Center.

As the spring 2023 semester comes to an end, we’re providing some reminders regarding the rules and regulations for on-campus employment for F-1 and J-1 international students.

For those graduating in spring 2023

Unfortunately, there are different rules compared to U.S. students as it relates to their final day of employment. F-1 and J-1 international students cannot work beyond their degree completion date.

  • For undergraduate students, this is ASU’s degree conferral date. Therefore, the last day they can work on campus is May 8, 2023
  • For graduate students, it depends on their final academic requirement. However, for most students, it is also ASU’s degree conferral date, of May 8, 2023. For students with thesis or dissertations, it may be slightly different depending on their final academic requirement.

If you’d like clarification, please reach out to us.

Hours per week allowed during summer break

F-1 and J-1 students continuing in their degree programs through the summer semester or into the fall semester and beyond are permitted to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer semester. This is regardless of whether they are enrolled in classes during the summer or not. The only exception is if the summer semester is their final semester, then they are still limited to 20 hours per week.

The official summer break begins May 9, 2023, and will last until Aug. 13, 2023. Since May 9 is a Tuesday, it is recommended that students do not work more than four hours on Monday, May 8, but they can work full time the remainder of the week, up to 40 hours.

Beginning Aug. 14, 2023, students will need to resume working no more than 20 hours per week.
