Guide to hiring OPT-authorized students for volunteer positions

Greetings from the International Students and Scholars Center. Thank you in advance for supporting ASU’s F-1 students with postgraduation employment opportunities. As you know, providing our graduates with degree-specific volunteer tasks is a win-win.

Many of you may know that the technology sector and other fields have been impacted by layoffs, which means a loss of opportunities for our graduates. The Resume Depository (see tab Fall 2023) holds resumes of ASU students who wish to be considered for employment opportunities.

A student who has been authorized for Post-completion Optional Practical Training must maintain status by obtaining employment directly related to their field of study for more than 20 hours per week. Offering a volunteer position could benefit a recent graduate by helping them maintain their status while searching for that perfect job. Students on Post-OPT can participate in both paid and unpaid employment.
