Guide to hiring OPT-authorized students for volunteer positions

Greetings from the International Students and Scholars Center. Thank you in advance for supporting ASU’s F-1 students with post-graduation employment opportunities. As you know, providing our graduates with degree-specific volunteer tasks is a win-win.

As many of you may know, the job market continues to be challenging for our students, which means fewer opportunities for our graduates. The Resume Depository (see tab Spring 2024) holds resumes of ASU students who wish to be considered for employment opportunities.

A student who has been authorized for Post-Completion Optional Practical Training must maintain status by obtaining employment directly related to their field of study for more than 20 hours per week. Offering a volunteer position could benefit a recent graduate by helping them maintain their status while searching for that perfect job. Students on Post-OPT can participate in both paid and unpaid employment.
