understanding your I-20

We are here to help you understand your I-20

Greetings from the International Students and Scholars Center at Arizona State University. We want to share some useful information about your Form I-20.

It is important that you understand your Form I-20 so you know how to request updates for any personal or academic information listed on your form that may change. In order to assist you in understanding your I-20, the ISSC has created a webpage that provides detailed information about each section. The site will also help you better understand what is included in the form and what can or cannot be updated.

It is also important to be aware of the reasons why you might need to request an updated I-20. Some reasons for requesting an updated I-20 include the following:

  • Official name change (given name or surname).
  • Change in country of citizenship.
  • Change in major.
  • Change in education level (e.g., from master’s to doctorate degree program).

We recommend students review all new I-20s received by the ISSC before signing at the bottom of page one. Please remember that I-20s are sent electronically to your ASU email address. You must print and sign this document, and carry it with you at all times.
