Travel reminder

Now that the Spring 2024 semester is over, ASU's International Students and Scholars Center wishes you a successful and safe summer. If you are considering traveling during the summer break, we want to provide you with important information to aid your planning. Continuing students are expected to return to ASU by the first day of classes for the Fall 2024 semester, which is August 22, 2024.

Travel reminders

Need a travel signature?
If you are traveling outside the U.S., please check page two of your most recently issued I-20 or page one of your DS-2019 for a valid travel signature. If you do not have a travel signature or your travel signature is no longer valid, you will need to request one. You can review our website for additional documentation required when re-entering the U.S.

  • If you are a current student, travel signatures are required for re-entry into the U.S. and are valid for one year from the date last signed.
  • If you are a student on Post-OPT or STEM-OPT, travel signatures are required for re-entry into the U.S. and are valid for six months from the date last signed.

Travel within the U.S.
If you are traveling within the U.S., you do not need a valid travel signature. However, it is essential to carry identification documents, including your I-20 or DS-2019, a printout of your I-94, and a valid passport.

How to get a travel signature
Submit your travel signature request for your I-20 or DS-2019 document using the MyISSC eForm Portal. Remember, a travel signature is not required to depart the U.S., only for re-entry. The ISSC cannot expedite last-minute travel signature requests so you must plan accordingly.

Please note: The ISSC processing time is up to 7 business days, which does not include weekends or ASU observed holidays. We are always working to process requests as quickly as we can and recommend students plan ahead and consider the processing time when submitting their requests.

Travel assistance
Prior to traveling to the U.S. for the start of the Fall 2024 semester, please review our travel website for important information and reminders, including a list of required documents for re-entry.

Additionally, please download, print, and carefully read the ASU support letter linked below. Remember to bring a physical copy of this document in your carry-on luggage during your travels.

Upon your return
Every time you re-enter the U.S., your I-94 record should reflect your most recent entry. We recommend checking your I-94 record a week or so after you enter the U.S. to ensure it is up to date.
