Off-campus employment authorization reminder
As a reminder, a Social Security number (SSN) is required to work in the U.S. However, having an SSN alone does not authorize you to work off-campus without specific work authorization.
Please be aware that working off-campus without the appropriate authorization will jeopardize your immigration status. F-1 students are not permitted to work at local restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, or similar businesses without proper authorization. If you wish to work off-campus, please review the available authorizations on our website. You must obtain the necessary work authorization before beginning any off-campus employment.
Once you have secured employment, you will be eligible to apply for a Social Security number if you do not already have one.
Please note that an SSN is generally not required to open a bank account, rent an apartment, start a mobile phone contract, or obtain a credit card.
