Travel reminders

Now that the fall semester has ended and many students are wishing to travel home during the break, the International Students and Scholars Center would like to share some important travel information with you.

As a reminder, all students are expected to return to campus by the first day of classes for the Spring 2024 semester, Jan. 8, 2024.

Do I need a travel signature?
If you plan to travel out of the country, remember to check page 2 of your I‐20 or page 1 of your DS‐2019 for a valid travel signature. Travel signatures are required for current students to re-enter the U.S. and remain valid for one year from the date last signed. For students on OPT, signatures are valid for only six months from the date last signed.

What are the documents I need to re-enter the U.S.?
When traveling outside the U.S., you will need certain documents to re-enter the country.

The ISSC has also prepared a travel support letter for international students re-entering the country after the break. The letter contains useful travel information and important reminders. We strongly recommend printing a physical copy and carrying it with you as you travel.

If you are traveling within the U.S., you do not need a valid travel signature on your I-20, but you must carry identification documents with you.

How can I get a travel signature?
You can submit your travel signature request for your I-20 or DS-2019 document using the MyISSC eForm Portal. Processing time can take up to 10 business days. Please note that you do not need a travel signature to depart the U.S., only to re-enter.

Upon your return
Every time you re-enter the U.S., your I-94 record should reflect your most recent entry. We would advise that you check your I-94 record a week or so after you enter the U.S. to ensure it is up to date.
