On-campus employment information

F-1 students can work on campus while enrolled at ASU. On-campus jobs give you valuable work experience and extra income to support your studies.

Important reminders about on-campus jobs

  • Apply for “on-campus jobs” through ASU’s job portal.
    • When submitting your application in Workday, remember F-1 visa holders are eligible to work on campus because their immigration status provides sponsorship for these jobs.
  • Note: Jobs with Education at Work are not considered on-campus employment.

On-campus work hour limits for F-1 students

  • During the fall and spring semesters, you cannot work more than 20 hours per week.
  • The workweek is Monday to Sunday, and hours cannot be averaged over a two-week pay period. If you work for Aramark, you still must calculate your hours from Monday to Sunday.
    • Example: You cannot work 18 hours one week and 22 hours the next.
  • For more details, visit our On-Campus Employment website.

Working off-campus without permission is not allowed

This includes jobs at local businesses like restaurants, gas stations, or retail stores, even if the work is unpaid. Working off-campus without authorization can risk your immigration status. If you need permission to work off-campus, check our website for guidance.

Applying for a Social Security Number (SSN)

Once you’ve secured a job, you can apply for an SSN if you don’t already have one. An SSN is required to work in the U.S., but it does not allow you to work off-campus without work authorization.

Keep in mind

You don’t need an SSN to open a bank account, rent an apartment, get a mobile phone plan, or apply for a credit card.
