Upon arrival to the U.S. (or arrival to ASU for SEVIS transfer students), you must complete a mandatory SEVIS New Student Check-in online through the ISSC eForm no later than the first day of the academic session listed as the Program Start Date on your I-20 or DS-2019. You will find the link to the eForm in My ASU under Priority Tasks. You can use your smartphone or computer to upload copies of your immigration documents.

You do not need to report your arrival in person to the ISSC. 


Who must complete SEVIS New Student Check-in?

  • F-1 and J-1 students attending ASU for the first time.

  • F-1 students returning to ASU using a new initial I-20.

  • Students who have transferred their SEVIS record to ASU from another U.S. institution.

  • Students who have transferred their SEVIS record to ASU from ASU Global Launch.

How to complete the SEVIS New Student Check-in


Arrive in the U.S. and at ASU no later than the start date listed on your I-20 or DS-2019.


Gather your immigration documents:

  1. DS-2019 (J-1 students only)

  2. Passport (page showing your biographical information and photo).

  3. F-1 or J-1 visa, or change of status Approval Notice. (Canadian citizens will need to submit I-901 payment confirmation.)

  4. Paper or Electronic I-94 retrieved from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (click on GET MOST RECENT I-94).


Log into MY ASU

Log in to My ASU and click on your Profile. Add your local address in USPS format (residential or temporary address in Phoenix area) and add your U.S. phone number.


Complete SEVIS New Student Check-in

In My ASU, click on Complete SEVIS New Student Check-in under your Priority Tasks. Read and follow the instructions.

Submit the eForm

Submit the eForm and close the web browser by clicking the X to close the page. Do not cancel the eForm.

What to expect

  1. After you submit your eForm, you will receive an email confirmation of the submission.

  2. Once we have reviewed your eForm we will contact you via email to let you know that your SEVIS New Student Check-in has been approved. You will receive your new Continued Attendance I-20 via email as well. 

  • We will call or email you if further information or corrections are required.

Who does not need to complete SEVIS New Student Check-in?

  • Current F-1 and J-1 students.

  • F-2 and J-2 dependents .

How do I update my local and SEVIS addresses?

To update your addresses, please visit Address Maintenance. LOCAL address is your residential address here in the United States. SEVIS address (home country address) is your residential address in your country of citizenship or permanent residence. The other address types (home, mailing, billing etc.) do not satisfy the requirements for your immigration record. The only required address types are LOCAL and SEVIS.

How do I format my U.S. address?

Your LOCAL address must be in the proper format based on the U.S. Postal Service. A sample address is:

I am living in a residence hall. What address should I put for my local address?

If you live in a residence hall and are unsure of the correct address, please refer to the University Housing webpage for address details of residential colleges at ASU.

My I-94 is not showing up on the website. What should I do?

If you are not able to access your I-94 record on the Department of Homeland Security website, then please complete the following steps: 

  1. Submit a copy of your admission stamp from your passport that shows your visa status and date of entry into the U.S. The ISSC can use this to approve your SEVIS Check-In in place of the I-94.

  2. Contact the Deferred Inspection Office so that they can assist you in reviving your I-94 record for future use. You can contact the Sky Harbor Terminal 4 Deferred Inspection Office at 602-392-4440.

Please complete the SEVIS Check-In eForm before visiting the Deferred Inspection Office.

My I-94 shows that I entered on a different visa. What should I do?

If your I-94 record is showing that you have entered on a different visa type, i.e., B-1/B-2, then please submit a copy of your admission stamp in its place. Your admission stamp should show the correct visa type. You will then need to contact the Deferred Inspection Office so that they can correct the information on your I-94. You can contact the Sky Harbor Terminal 4 Deferred Inspection office at 602-392-4440. Please complete the SEVIS Check-In eForm before visiting the Deferred Inspection Office.

If your admission stamp also shows the incorrect visa type, then please schedule an advising appointment with ASU’s International Students and Scholars Center to speak with an immigration advisor about your case.

What is the difference between my I-94 and my admission stamp?

Form I-94, the Arrival-Departure Record, is a form used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection intended to keep track of the arrival date and visa status and the departure date of people who are not United States citizens or lawful permanent residents. Your admission stamp is added to your passport when you cross the border into the U.S. The Customs Border Protection officer will stamp your passport and write the visa type on which you are entering the U.S. It is imperative that the visa type listed on your admission stamp matches the official visa in your passport.

What is the I-901 SEVIS fee and do I need to pay it?

Regulation requires all prospective F and M students to pay the I-901 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System Fee before the Department of State issues you a visa. To pay the I-901 SEVIS Fee, visit to access the SEVIS Form I-901. The ISSC will not be able to process your SEVIS Check-In until you pay this fee. 

I am a newly admitted student that is starting this semester but I will be taking classes remotely from my home country. Do I need to submit a SEVIS Check-In?

If you are an incoming international student and will remain outside of the United States to study remotely for the beginning of the new semester, or have deferred your I-20 to the following semester, then you cannot submit the SEVIS Check-In eForm. The SEVIS New Student Check-In eForm can only be submitted by students who have used their Initial or Transfer Pending I-20 to enter the United States. If you are currently outside of the U.S., you cannot submit the SEVIS New Student Check-In eForm at this time. If you are not able to arrive by the start of the new semester but plan to enroll in ASU Sync classes from your home country, please update your I-20 with ASU Admission Services. I am a newly admitted student starting this semester, but when I arrive in the U.S. I will be living out of state and taking courses via ASU Sync. Is this allowed, and if so what should my local address be in My ASU?

The ISSC recommends that all students maintain physical presence in the greater Phoenix area throughout the semester. Your local address must be updated within 10 days of any change, and must reflect your physical location within the U.S.

I have submitted my SEVIS Check-In, but the Priority Task on My ASU has not gone away. What should I do?

Generally, the “Complete SEVIS Check-in” link will disappear from My ASU Priority Tasks a day after the approval of your SEVIS New Student Check-in. However, it might not disappear right away. As long as you can see the "Confirmation" checkbox shows complete status, no further action is required on your part.

I do not have the SEVIS Check-In Priority Task on My ASU. What should I do?

 In order to access the SEVIS Check-in eForm through iStart, please do the following:

1. Go to

2. Click on Self-Service Portal and sign in.

3. The SEVIS Check-in eForm is located under the New Student Check-in menu on the left-hand side of the page.

4. Provide all required information and documents.

5. Click Submit.

I am a transfer student and my visa has the name of my previous school. Do I need to get an updated visa?

No, as long as your visa is valid and you have an I-20 from your current institution, you are able to use your visa to enter the U.S. 

How much time do I have to submit the SEVIS Check-in?

You must report your arrival to the ISSC through the SEVIS Check-In eForm by the first day of the semester.

I am a J-1 visa holder. Do I need to have a U.S. phone number?

Yes, all J-1 students must have a U.S. phone number.

What documents do I need to upload to my SEVIS Check-in as a J-1 student?

You will need to upload the following documents:

  • DS-2019 (for J-1 students, front page only).

  • Paper or print-out of electronic Form I-94.

  • Passport.

  • U.S. visa (except Canadian citizens).

  • Your U.S. local address (in the greater Phoenix area).

  • U.S. phone number.
