Full-Time Enrollment Requirements

Students must be enrolled full-time every semester, with limited exceptions. Students also need to make progress that is consistent with standard departmental expectations and academic requirements (taking classes that earn credit toward the degree).

  • Only three credit hours online/distance learning classes may be applied towards full-time requirement per semester.

  • Sponsored students may be subject to specific enrollment requirements from their sponsors in terms of hybrid and online course enrollment.

  • Classes taken as an audit cannot be counted towards full time enrollment.

Enrollment combination options allowed to maintain SEVIS compliance include:

  • Session C only (recommended)
  • Sessions A, B, and C
  • Sessions A and B
  • Sessions A and C
  • Sessions B and C

Enrollment in any combination must be done no later than the start of every semester.

First Semester at ASU in Summer

To maintain SEVIS compliance, F-1 and J-1 international students who start their degree program at ASU for the first time in the summer semester and students returning to ASU for the summer semester on an initial or transfer I-20 must enroll in a full course of study by the start of the summer session. A full course of study, or full-time status, is determined by:

  • the number of credits in which you are enrolled for the semester

  • the number of in-person and online credits you are enrolled in

  • the combination of sessions (A, B and C) you are enrolled in

  • whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student
