On July 17, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security published a final rule eliminating Duration of Status for certain nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors. I-20/DS-2019 replacement & extensions
F-1/J-1 students
All international students who study in the United States must have a valid Form I-20 “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status” or Form DS-2019 “Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status”. In some instances, students will need to receive an updated I-20/DS-2019.
