Explorer Buddy Program

The Explorer Buddy Program is a peer-support initiative designed to help first-year international students transition smoothly into life at Arizona State University. New international students (Explorers) are paired with experienced students (Buddies) who provide guidance, connection, and support during their first semester.

What is the Explorer Buddy Program?

  • A structured peer-to-peer program through the International Students and Scholars Center.
  • Connects new international students with trained student Buddies.
  • Focused on easing academic, social, and cultural transitions.
  • Runs during students’ first semester at ASU.

How it works

  • Explorers sign up for the program before/at the start of the semester.
  • Explorers are matched with a Buddy based on shared interests and background (if applicable).
  • Buddies reach out before/at the start of the semester.
  • Pairs stay connected through regular check-ins and informal support.
  • Students are invited to ISSC-hosted events and gatherings.

Want to learn more about being a Buddy?

Are you ready to share your ASU experiences and make a meaningful impact? The International Students and Scholars Center is looking for experienced international students to serve as Buddies in our Explorer Buddy Program for the upcoming semester!

Buddy Requirements:

  • Training: Attend two required trainings
  • Attended ASU for at least one semester

Buddy Expectations:

  • Consistent Connection: Maintain weekly contact with your Explorer (via text, call, or WhatsApp).
  • Monthly Meetings: Meet with your Explorer at least twice per month (this could be at an ISSC event or on your own).
  • Reporting: Complete a short interaction report for each meeting.
  • ISSC Events: Attend ISSC events to strengthen your relationship and the wider campus community.

How pairing works:

  • Questionnaire: Buddies and Explorers are paired based on a questionnaire that considers factors like major, language, and interests.
  • Strategic Selection: Matching is dependent on the size and preferences of the incoming Explorer pool, meaning a perfect fit cannot always be guaranteed. However, every effort is made to pair Explorers and Buddies who are compatible.
  • Early Connection: You will be connected with your Explorer via email/phone before the semester starts.
  • Meetup: We will host an official meet-up event for all pairs at the beginning of the semester.
