On July 17, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security published a final rule eliminating Duration of Status for certain nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors. The rule was scheduled to take effect on September 15, 2026. Please visit our Duration of Status Rule Change webpage for additional information and updates.

Update: On September 14, 2026, a U.S. federal judge has issued an order blocking the new rules from going into effect at this time. As a result, the new rules will not take effect on September 15, 2026, and the current immigration rules remain in place while the court case continues.

Don’t drop below full time enrollment!

As ASU’s fall 2026 session A comes to a close and session B begins shortly, we want to remind all F-1/J-1 students of the full time enrollment requirements.

Session A ends on October 9, 2026.  Session B begins on October 14, 2026.  The last day to add a session B class without college approval is October 15, 2026.

Full-time enrollment requirements include in-person credit requirements:

  • Undergraduate students must have at least 9 in-person credits.
  • Graduate students must have at least 6 in-person credits.

Please note that you must have in-person credits throughout the entire academic semester.

Review the enrollment requirements

Dropping a class that puts you below full-time after the session B add deadline may impact your ability to return to full-time enrollment. Failure to meet full-time enrollment requirements will jeopardize your immigration status. If you are unsure whether dropping a class will affect your status, please contact the ISSC before making any changes.

Receiving an “E” grade for a course does not impact your immigration status.  For more information about the full time enrollment requirements, please review our Full-Time Enrollment webpage.
