Are you planning to travel outside of the U.S. during the fall semester or fall break? Be sure to consider your travel plans carefully. 

• When traveling outside the U.S., certain documents are required to reenter the country.
• If you are traveling within the U.S., a travel signature is not necessary, but you must carry identification documents with you.

As a reminder, the new rules impacting F-1 and J-1 students take effect on September 15, 2026. If you re-enter the United States on or after this date, your Form I-94 will show a fixed “Admit Until Date” (AUD) instead of “D/S.” As a result, some benefits associated with the legacy D/S system will no longer apply. If you plan to travel out of the country, check page 2 of your I‐20 or page 1 of your DS‐2019 for a valid travel signature. Travel signatures are required for current students to reenter the U.S. and are valid for one year from the date they were last signed. You may travel multiple times with a valid travel signature within its one-year validity.

Be sure to submit your travel signature request to the International Students and Scholars Center as soon as possible to avoid any delays.

You can submit your travel signature request for your I-20 or DS-2019 document using the MyISSC eForm Portal. Please note that a travel signature is only needed to reenter the U.S., not to depart. Plan ahead, as the ISSC cannot expedite last-minute requests.

Please note: The ISSC processing time is up to 7 business days, excluding weekends and ASU holidays. We do not expedite requests, so please do not ask us to do so.  We recommend planning accordingly and consider processing times when submitting your requests.

Every time you re-enter the U.S., your I- 94 record should reflect your most recent entry.  We would advise that you check your I-94 record a week or so after you enter the U.S. to ensure it is up to date.
