On July 17, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security published a final rule eliminating Duration of Status for certain nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors. The rule was scheduled to take effect on September 15, 2026. Please visit our Duration of Status Rule Change webpage for additional information and updates.

Update: On September 14, 2026, a U.S. federal judge has issued an order blocking the new rules from going into effect at this time. As a result, the new rules will not take effect on September 15, 2026, and the current immigration rules remain in place while the court case continues.

Get Connected: Networking, Mentoring, and OPT Resources

This information should be helpful to all students who may be graduating in either fall 2026 or spring 2027 who may be interested in searching for Optional Practical Training opportunities once you graduate. If you are not graduating within the next semester, do not worry — you can still use these resources.

Something that students should consider when applying for Post-OPT, is a focus on networking, mentoring, and skill development. ASU hosts several job fairs that you may have already attended and you may consider starting to apply for jobs and researching companies you may be interested in.

There are several resources available to you:

  • The company’s job search and application page.
  • ASU Career Link, a service offered to ASU students that connects you with companies that are hiring.
  • Career Services resources that connect you with jobs around the world.
  • ISSC’s OPT handbook, which includes stories from former students who have navigated the OPT process.
