Reporting Employment on Post-OPT: Keep Your Records Up to Date
One of the most important responsibilities during Post-Completion OPT is keeping your employment and address information up to date.
Many students remember to report their first job but forget that they must continue reporting changes throughout their entire Post-OPT authorization period.
Failure to report required updates can result in inaccurate government records and may affect your ability to demonstrate that you maintained your F-1 status.
Reporting Requirements
The SEVP Portal is an important tool that allows you to review and update your employment and contact information. You must report changes in the SEVP Portal within 10 days of the change occurring.
This includes:
- Starting a job
- Ending a job
- Employment information changes
- Change in supervisor
- Change in employer address
- Change in job title
Changes to your physical address
- Changes to your mailing address
Review your SEVP Portal Regularly
Reporting promptly helps ensure your SEVIS record remains accurate and reflects your current situation. You should regularly verify that the following information in your SEVP Portal is accurate and up to date:
- Employer information
- Employment dates
- Physical and/or mailing address
- Contact information
Before submitting any updates, carefully review the information for accuracy.
Changing Employers
If you leave one employer and begin working for another, you must report both changes.
Make sure you:
- Report the end date of your previous employment
- Report complete and accurate information for your new employer
Remember that any gap between jobs is considered unemployment and will count toward your 90 allowable unemployment days.
Working for Multiple Employers
Working for multiple employers is allowed on Post-OPT.
If you have more than one job:
- Each position must be related to your major field of study
- You must work at least 20 hours per week in total
- All employers must be reported within the SEVP Portal
Common Reporting Mistakes
Avoid these common errors:
- Forgetting to create their SEVP Portal account
- Forgetting to report a new employer
- Reporting only one employer when working multiple jobs
- Forgetting to report the end of a job
- Waiting longer than 10 days to report the information
Note: If you are having issues accessing the SEVP Portal or updating your employment information in the SEVP Portal, you will need to submit the Post-OPT SEVP Portal Issues eForm by doing the following:
- Go to the MyISSC eForm Portal
- Click on “MyISSC eForm Portal” and log in
- Click the “F-1 Practical Training” menu on the left
- Click on “Post-OPT SEVP Portal Issues” to access the eForm
- Provide all the required information and submit the request
Reporting with Honesty, Accuracy, and Integrity
All information reported in the SEVP Portal should be complete, accurate, and truthful.
Students should only report employment that is legitimate, active, and meets all Post-OPT requirements. Reporting inaccurate information, misrepresenting employment, or providing false documentation can be considered fraud and result in serious immigration consequences.
Remember that you may be asked to provide evidence of your employment in the future, including during immigration benefit applications, visa appointments, and/or when seeking admission to the U.S. Maintaining accurate records and reporting information with honesty and integrity helps protect your F-1 status and future immigration benefits.
Key Reminders
Maintaining accurate employment and address information is your responsibility while on Post-OPT. Reporting requirements continue throughout your entire Post-OPT authorization period—not just when you receive your first job.
Remember to:
- Report any changes within 10 days
- Review your SEVP Portal regularly
- Track employment start and end dates carefully
- Keep records of all Post-OPT employment
Taking time to review your information now can help prevent issues later and ensure your SEVIS record accurately reflects your employment on Post-OPT.
