On July 17, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security published a final rule eliminating Duration of Status for certain nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors. The rule was scheduled to take effect on September 15, 2026. Please visit our Duration of Status Rule Change webpage for additional information and updates.

Update: On September 14, 2026, a U.S. federal judge has issued an order blocking the new rules from going into effect at this time. As a result, the new rules will not take effect on September 15, 2026, and the current immigration rules remain in place while the court case continues.

Updating your Addresses

The International Student and Scholar Center is reminding students currently participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT) of a critical federal requirement: any change in address must be reported within 10 days.

According to U.S. immigration regulations, OPT students are required to keep both their local U.S. address and SEVIS address current in their My ASU account. Failure to update this information in a timely manner can result in serious consequences, including potential impacts on a student’s immigration status.

Address updates may seem like a small detail, but they are a vital part of staying compliant with OPT requirements. Please take a few minutes to log into My ASU and ensure your information is correct.

The ISSC recommends that students set reminders to check their contact details regularly and make updates immediately after any change in residence.
